Colin Gordon’s Growing Apart: A Political History of American Inequality uses Scalar as a platform for a “born-digital” examination of inequality in modern America. Growing Apart is composed in three parts, covering, in turn, the dimensions of wage, income, and wealth inequality in the United States; the “usual suspects” (technology, trade, demographic change) often employed to explain American inequality; and the political “differences that matter.” Scalar facilitates the use of conventional graphics, interactive data visualizations (composed in Tableau), and short narrated graphics (embedded via Vimeo) to carry and illustrate the argument. All of the data products are updated as new (monthly, annual) numbers become available. A combination of hyperlinks, Scalar notes, and sidebars tie the analysis to the latest historical and economic research.
