The Scalar API is a powerful way to use, reuse, and remix Scalar content to drive custom websites and applications like The Knotted Line. The team is currently creating documentation for the API that will help with integrating your Scalar content in your own custom sites and apps, but as an introduction, starting today you can use the Scalar API Explorer to experiment with different ways of getting content out of your book.

The API Explorer accepts any URL from a publicly-accessible Scalar book and generates a new URL for retrieving that book’s content according to the settings you specify. You can access the data describing a single page, a path and its contents, all of a book’s media, and more. The API Explorer lets you run each API call within a the browser so you can see its results immediately.

We’ll be posting the API documentation soon, along with a JavaScript library that wraps an object model around the raw data to make it easier to query and use. Until then, happy exploring, and let us know what you think!
